Caring for Our Water

Did you know that there is the same amount of water on the earth as when the earth was formed? What we have is all that we will ever have, just in different forms. Water moves in cycles; evaporation, condensation, precipitation, run off, and infiltration. Also, did you know that 98% of the earth’s water is saline? The 2% that remains must provide us with the water to nourish ourselves, our crops, our animals and even our electricity as in the case of hydro electric plants; all this and many more. Of the 2%, only 1% can be used for drinking. So who is taking care of our water? We all should be but, we know that we’re not. We are told how to conserve water but seldom do we hear about not mistreating our water. We point the finger at businesses that dump toxins in our rivers. We fuss at those in agriculture who use toxic chemicals to kill weeds or use products to produce abundent growth but, do we take to task those manufacturers who make the products that are used in many homes for cleaning? These cleaning products eventually wind up in our sewers and often are found in our rivers, especially during a flood when drainage systems are over-taxed. Who are we protecting? Certainly not the homeowner. How many products will advise on their labels “use only with plenty of ventilation”?

FEMA, through the Department of Homeland Security, issued an in-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness to assist us against all types of hazards. Hazards such as floods, fire, tsunamis, and, are you ready for this; HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL EMERGENCIES. Among these hazards, which are acts of nature and which are caused by man. That’s right, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Why does it seem impossible for our own govenment to ban such chemicals for household use, or for these manufacture’s to stop making these products? Remember, these products include bathroom cleaners, furniture polish, bug sprays, laundry detergents, bleach, etc. Besides the damage that these products do to our water, they have the capability to create other illnesses in us. Headaches, difficulty breathing, and effects on our nervous system amongst others.

The good news is that we have choices and we can choose not to buy these products. If you saw Oprah’s TV show on April 20, 2007, you saw her present some choices. Among those choices is my favorite of 14 years and now, seemingly Oprahs favorite  Make a difference, check it out at www.shaklee.net/greenhome you will be glad you made the choice to care for our water.
